Can Google Voice receive verification codes?
Google Voice can receive text messages, but that does not mean every verification sender will deliver to a Voice number. Identify whether the website refused the number, says it sent a code, or imposed an attempt limit before changing your setup.
Short answer
Sometimes. Google says Voice can receive texts from anywhere in the world, while some websites, including banks and subscription services, will not send to Voice numbers. Its help separately says text messaging on paid Voice subscriptions is available only in the US, so check which Voice product you use. Voice cannot send texts to five- or six-digit short codes; that sending restriction is not a blanket claim that all incoming codes fail. The particular sender still decides whether to send a verification text to your number.

Receiving a text and qualifying for an OTP are different
The Google Voice help page describes ordinary inbound texts and explicitly warns that some websites will not send to Voice numbers. It also limits text messaging on paid Voice subscriptions to the US, so the product and location matter. Separately, it prohibits sending texts from Voice to five- or six-digit short codes. That outbound limit should not be rewritten as “Google Voice never receives verification codes.”
A sender may accept one Voice number and reject another request, or it may apply its own number-type rule. Discord provides a concrete example of a stricter policy: it asks for a valid mobile number and excludes VoIP, burner and landline numbers. That Discord rule applies to Discord, not to every website. Read the rule of the service actually requesting your code.
Work through the result shown on the screen
A successful ordinary conversation on Voice shows that the Voice inbox works for that sender. It does not prove that a different website uses the same SMS route or accepts the number for account verification.
- Before requesting: confirm the service accepts the country and number category, especially when it explicitly requires a mobile carrier number.
- If the number is rejected immediately: preserve the exact error. Check whether it names number type, country, prior association or a cooldown; use the sender’s help for that condition.
- If the sender reports a code sent: confirm the number entered, then check Google Voice Messages and Spam. Google specifically recommends looking in Spam for a missing expected text.
- If a retry limit appears: follow the sender’s interval. More requests do not change its acceptance rule and may prolong the wait.

Choose an alternative that matches the account’s lifetime
If the sender requires a mobile carrier number, a personal mobile line that you control is the clearest path. Check that the line belongs to the required country and can still receive a later sign-in or recovery code. Google specifically warns against depending on Google Voice to get codes for the Google Account used to access Voice: if you sign out of Voice and the sign-in code goes to Voice, you can be locked out. Set up another supported Google Account method, such as backup codes, a passkey or a security key, while you still have access. Other services offer different methods, so use their actual account-recovery flow.
A temporary SMS activation may suit a permitted, one-time task after you check the live offer and sender rules. It cannot promise that a service refusing Google Voice will accept a different virtual number, and it cannot promise access to the same number later. Do not use a short order as the sole recovery route for a durable account.

Common questions
Does Google Voice receive every verification SMS?
No. Google says it receives text messages, but some websites will not send to Voice numbers. The sending website’s own rule determines whether that code is offered.
Does the short-code rule mean all codes are blocked?
No. Google’s stated short-code restriction concerns sending texts to five- or six-digit numbers from Voice. Incoming verification delivery is a separate question controlled partly by the sender.
Where should I look if the sender says it sent a code?
Check the exact number entered, Google Voice Messages and Spam. If it is absent, consult the sender’s status and help; an empty inbox alone does not identify the cause.
Should I buy a temporary number after Voice is rejected?
Only after you understand the sender’s rule. If it requires a durable mobile line or future access to the same number, a short activation may be unsuitable.
Can I use Voice as the only code destination for my Google Account?
Google advises against this. If you sign out of Voice and need a code sent to Voice to get back into the Google Account, you may be locked out. Configure a separate supported backup method while signed in.
