How can you receive verification SMS abroad?
First identify which phone number the account already knows. A travel data plan can provide internet, but it does not automatically move SMS from your home number to a new eSIM.
Short answer
For codes sent to your existing mobile number, keep that line active and confirm with its carrier that incoming SMS works at your destination. You can use a separate data-only travel eSIM for internet while the home line handles calls and texts; Airalo documents this dual-line setup. If you need a new local number instead, choose a plan that explicitly includes voice and text and check the sender’s country and number rules.

Before departure: protect the number your accounts already use
List the important accounts that send codes to your current mobile number. Confirm that the SIM or eSIM for that number remains active, that your carrier supports service in the destination, and what it charges for roaming. Ask the carrier about inbound SMS specifically; data roaming terms alone are not proof of SMS availability. If an account offers backup codes, a passkey or another recovery step, set it up while you can still sign in.
A new travel eSIM does not inherit the number saved at your bank or other account. If you intend to change that account’s number, follow its own update process before losing access to the old line. Some changes require a code sent to the previous number.
During the trip: put data and SMS on the correct lines
On a dual-SIM phone, you may select the travel eSIM for mobile data and keep the home line on for voice and SMS. Airalo’s help gives settings paths for iOS, Samsung and Pixel and warns that the home provider may require roaming and may charge for it. Check the actual device settings; turning off the home line to avoid data charges also cuts off its SMS route.
If the travel plan itself is labelled Data Only, it does not receive carrier SMS. If it is labelled Data, Voice & Text, inspect whether that particular plan assigns a number and supports texts in your destination. Even with SMS capability, a sender may require your existing registered number or reject a different country or number type.

If a code does not arrive abroad, follow its destination
For a Google Account, Google documents backup codes, passkeys, security keys and other previously configured ways to verify access. Use the equivalent official path for other services; the methods available depend on what you set up earlier.
- Check the number shown by the sender. If it is your home number, inspect that line’s network connection, roaming status and SMS inbox, then contact the home carrier if normal texts also fail.
- If ordinary SMS arrives but one service’s code does not, read that service’s resend limit, country rule and alternate verification choices. The problem may be sender-specific.
- If you entered a new eSIM number, verify that the plan really includes SMS, that it is in coverage, and that the account accepts changing to that number.
- If you no longer control the registered number, use the service’s official recovery route or previously saved backup method. A temporary number cannot intercept an SMS addressed elsewhere.
Common questions
Will my data-only eSIM receive bank verification texts?
No SMS is delivered to the data-only eSIM line itself. If the bank sends to your home number, that home line may still receive it when enabled and supported abroad.
Can I use the travel eSIM for data and my usual number for SMS?
Yes, on a compatible dual-line setup. Keep the usual line active for calls and texts, select the travel plan for data, and check the home carrier’s roaming rules and charges.
Does buying a voice-and-text eSIM update my accounts?
No. The plan may give you a new SMS-capable number, but existing accounts continue using the number recorded in their settings until you change it under their rules.
Can a temporary number recover a code sent to my old SIM?
No. It can receive only messages addressed to the temporary assigned number during the order’s active window, subject to sender acceptance.
